Aayla Cyclone has devastated entire Sundarban. 46 lakh people are homeless. 6 lakh houses are drowned. The entire life system of the population has collapsed.
I have been fortunate enough to visit the affected region as early as the 2nd day after a cyclone. I went to a place called Hemnagar with a relief team. Hemnagar is located in North 24 Parganas.
The central and state governments have proved one more time that they are worthless. That I, a student with very limited resource, was able to reach the affected area before any other governemental force could, proves this beyond any doubt. We delivered 5 quintal ChNire and 100 barrel drinking water on an emergency basis. Of course this was an almost insignificant aid compared to the overwhelming requirements of the people.
Irrespective of organizational affiliation a relief team has been summoned today (Sunday 4 PM) in Kolkata (Girish Park). Representatives of some student and youth organizations and individuals will come together. Our aim is to develop a Flood Relief Team that will be able to respond instantly to any natural disaster and also help the people to get involved in the process of helping the needy.
